Industry sets up post-Grenfell response body

The Industry Response Group – made up of Build UK, the Construction Industry Council and the Construction Products Association – will lead construction’s response to the tragedy, which claimed the lives of at least 80 people. The construction group will support the government’s Independent Advisory Panel, set up by communities secretary Sajid Javid last month to advise on any immediate measures that can be put in place to make buildings safer. The IAP is chaired by former London fire commissioner Sir Ken Knight. The Industry Response Group plans to co-ordinate the construction sector to ensure it can carry out any major programme of construction work needed and act as the focal point for government-industry communications. It will also advise the government on which parts of the industry have the expertise to carry out any work needed, and whether there is the capacity for this to be delivered. Latest government figures have revealed that 221 buildings inspected by local councils had cladding which failed combustibility testing. A statement by the Industry Response Group said: “We understand how concerned people are about the safety of buildings and we would like to reassure the public that the UK construction industry is working with urgency to respond to advice published by the government. ”This IRG will demonstrate leadership and, acting as a focal point, provide a collective response to government and other stakeholders.”
